History of Hewlett NY

Broadway Hewlett, New York

Are you thinking about buying or selling a home in Hewlett? This small hamlet is a census-designated town in Nassau County on Long Island and is one of the best places to buy a home this year. This article discusses the history of Hewlett, its real estate market, and whether or not now is a good time to buy in Hewlett.

Three hundred years ago, John Hewlett wanted to establish a home for his family and live a sustainable life in colonial New York. He began farming on the land, now considered Hewlett, and used Willow Pond as the source of water and nutrients for the livestock he cultivated on the farm.

Until 1914, John Hewlett and his family lived a nice life on Long Island. However, in the early 20th century, a famous lawyer from New York named Joseph Auerbach bought the majority of the land from the Hewlett family and built a summer home for himself in the area.

During the construction of the summer home, the builders found remains of what they would later discover to be the body of an Indian chief from the Algonquin tribe, estimated to be several hundred years old. The copper beads that the Indian chief was buried with were called “sewan” by Indian tribes, and Auerbach decided to use that name for the country club he built in Hewlett. He named it the Seawane Club, which is still operating as a country club in Hewlett Harbor today.

The Seawane Club was sold to new owners in the 1920s who found that the two-square-mile property was too big, so they developed the excess land and sold some of it for residential lots. However, no parts of the property were approved for commercial use and are still restricted today due to local zoning laws.

Real estate in Hewlett

People looking to buy a home in Hewlett in 2022 will find that prices are higher than normal. According to Redfin, the median sale price of a home in Hewlett is $730,000 which may be enough to price most first-time homebuyers out of the market.

However, there are plenty of opportunities for real estate investors to capitalize on the Hewlett market. As of October 2022, there are many distressed homes on the market that are ideal for house flippers or investors who want to build their investment portfolio with long-term rentals.
