History of Oceanside
What started as a town called South Bay was established by the English government in the 1600s. The English government renamed the town Christian Hook to appeal to religious Christians in the area, and land development started quickly thereafter. The town became known for its oysters and local businesses started to gain traction for selling some of the best oysters on Long Island.
Oceanside went through additional name changes in the coming years. The town was named “Oceanville” to highlight their oyster trade, but residents quickly found out that there already existed an Oceanville in New York. Residents changed the name once again to “Ocean Side” and then later condensed the name to Oceanside in 1918, which we know it as today.
Oceanside continued to develop throughout the 20th century. Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs opened their second location in Oceanside in 1959, drawing in business from the surrounding areas.

Oceanside experienced incredible development in the years following World War II. The housing boom in Oceanside saw developers building houses and developing the land quickly to keep up with the rising demand for housing. Schools were developed on the swampland in Oceanside throughout the 1900s, leaving the small town vulnerable to flooding (as proven by Hurricane Sandy in 2012).
